Argentina reaffirms its rights over the Malvinas Islands

Buenos Aires, Jan 3 (Prensa Latina) Argentina reaffirmed its legitimate and imprescriptible sovereignty rights over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas, on the 191st anniversary of the British occupation of those territories.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled that on January 3, 1833, the United Kingdom took those areas by force, an action that “constituted an act of force in times of peace, contrary to international law and never consented to by the Argentine Government, which immediately lodged its protests”.

Furthermore, it indicated that, since then, this nation defends its claim and the Constitution establishes that the recovery of the effective exercise of sovereignty over those territories, in accordance with the law and respecting the way of life of its inhabitants, constitutes a permanent and unrenounceable objective of this people.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) characterized the Malvinas question as a special and particular colonial situation involving a dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom, which must be resolved by the governments of both countries through negotiations, the text states.

We once again express our willingness to resume negotiations to find a solution to this dispute, in accordance with the provisions of the relevant UNGA resolutions, the Foreign Ministry states in the document.
