San Salvador, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) The majority of Salvadorans approve the reduction of municipalities adopted by the Legislative Assembly last June, showed today a survey of the University Institute of Public Opinion (Iudop), of the UCA.

The investigation of the Central American University (UCA) found that 53.6 percent of those questioned accepted the decision of the deputies last June 13 in the sense of reducing the number of municipalities from 262 to 44.

A few days ago, an online survey by the newspaper La Prensa Grafica (LPG) indicated that 64 percent of Salvadorans do not understand the reduction of municipalities in the country.

However, the UCA poll with the question “Do you agree or disagree with the deputies’ decision to reduce the number of municipalities in the country?”, showed a contrasting trend with 53.6 percent answering in the affirmative, 39.2 percent against, while 7.2 percent said they did not know about the issue or did not answer.

According to observers, the survey has greater validity given that this University frequently shows rejection to policies assumed by the government of President Nayib Bukele and the parliamentary group of New Ideas.

The survey also found that 61.1 percent of the population considered the reduction of municipalities will benefit them a lot or a little, 33.1 percent considered that it will not benefit them at all, while 5.8 percent confessed that they did not know about the issue or did not answer.

Before its approval, opposition media in the country denounced that the reduction of municipalities was illegal since the norms established that such changes could not be made one year before the elections, however Bukele’s proposal advanced smoothly and was adopted by the Assembly where his party has majority.
