Argentine association expresses concern about government measures

Buenos Aires, Dec 15 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine association Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo today expressed its concern about the new security protocol announced by the Government and demanded respect for the Constitution.

The day before, the head of the sector Patricia Bullrich reported that the Gendarmerie, the Naval Prefecture, the Airport and Federal Security Police, as well as the penitentiary system, will intervene in the face of pickets and partial or total blockades of streets and public places.

If they take to the streets there will be consequences. Action will be taken until the space is completely freed and the minimum necessary and sufficient force will be used. It will be graduated in proportion to resistance, she said.

In addition, she indicated that “the authors, accomplices and instigators of this type of crime” will be identified, as well as the vehicles used, which will be seized if they do not comply with traffic regulations and if their drivers do not have the required documents.

Those who bring children will be sanctioned and the competent authorities will be notified. Invoices will be sent to responsible organizations and individuals for all costs of security operations. The State will not pay for the use of forces, she added.

In a statement, the Grandmothers joined social organizations and unions that expressed their alarm and stated that Bullrich’s announcement “does not respect elementary rights provided for by the Constitution and international standards for citizens who wish to express their discontent with the measures of each current government”.

Social protest is a right, but also a guarantee for democratic dialogue between the people and their representatives. The worst tragedies in our history came hand in hand with repressive policies, they pointed out.

Shortly after celebrating 40 years of the longest democracy in our country, we ask our leaders to respect rights and the Magna Carta, the text concludes.
