Nepal and China discuss starting joint energy project

Kathmandu, Dec 11 (Prensa Latina) Nepal and China discuss starting the construction of the 220kw Jilong/Kerung-Rasuwagadhi-Chilime cross-border power line, a source close to the negotiations informed on Monday.

Officials from both countries will arrange to fix a joint mechanism for the initiative, which was completed with the signing of an agreement during Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s visit to China in September, Komal Nath Atreya, manager of the project, told reporters.

With the signing of the agreement, China pledged to provide grants to construct the cross-border power line shortly, according to a Kathmandu Post report.

The newspaper recalled that this would be the first-ever cross-border power line between the two nations, even though Nepal has a dozen such lines with its southern neighbor India.

According to Atreya, the two sides are discussing the date for the meeting of the joint working groups of the two countries involved.

The official said that China has agreed to fund a 16 km section on Nepal’s side, apart from building the transmission line on its territory, which is around 80 kilometers from the regular border.
