Dominican Rep asks island countries to have access to funds at COP 28

Santo Domingo, Dec 11 ( Prensa Latina) The Dominican Republic demanded to the international community, at the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP28), that developing countries have access to funds to face natural disasters, the Presidency's website published today.

The Dominican Republic also demanded in Dubai, venue of the meeting, a firm commitment to mobilize resources to maintain the goal of global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

“The way forward requires decisive action and a firm commitment to mobilize resources,” Deputy Minister of Climate Change and Sustainability Milagros De Camps said, speaking during the High-Level Segment.

“Our shared commitment, collective action and unwavering determination can and will produce positive results,” she added.

De Camps pointed to the need for the international community to work towards meeting the warming target because, otherwise, she said, “by the next global reckoning, 1.5 degrees will be nothing more than another unfulfilled promise on an unrecognizable planet.”

In this context, he recalled that an increase above this target implies more accumulations of rain and floods that cause insurmountable loss of life, as well as millions of dollars in damage to infrastructure and agriculture.
