Panamanian government will defend the rights of dismissed miners

Panama City, Dec 11 (Prensa Latina) The Panamanian government assured that it will watch over the rights of the four thousand employees who woke up today in uncertainty after the confirmation over the weekend by the company Minera Panama to request their dismissal.

The Ministry of Labor offered this guarantee to those affected by the request of this subsidiary of the Canadian company First Quantum Minerals to close the contracts of these workers “for justified causes of economic nature”, by means of a statement that caused different discussions and interpretations in the administrative and press media.

The decision of the mining entity with respect to those employees after the official order to the company to suspend its operations will be applied in parallel to the voluntary retirement of other workers of the entity and, in both cases, the payments will be the same, including “the money legally owed to them”, the statement specifies.

The official closure of Minera Panamá’s extraction, processing, benefit, transport, commercialization and export operations followed the November 28 ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) on the unconstitutionality of Law 406, which supported the contract between the State and the company.
