Representatives of Cuban project and FAO held dialogue at COP28

Dubai, Dec 10 (Prensa Latina) Representatives of Cuba's IRES project met today with the climate finance officer of the Latin American regional office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), María Mercedes Proaño.

The meeting took place at the Cuban pavilion at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), according to the account of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment on the social network X.

IRES, dedicated to climate resilience in rural communities, is implemented by the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture with technical assistance from FAO, and is the first Cuban initiative to be financed by the Green Climate Fund.

Founded in 2021 and planned for a period of seven years, on December 8 it was presented at COP28, where they explained details of the work developed with children and adolescents to motivate their families to protect the environment.

The project works on the rehabilitation of productive landscapes in seven municipalities vulnerable to climate change, with actions such as the clearing of land invaded by marabou and the establishment of agroforestry and forest grazing modules with impacts on food production.

It seeks to mitigate the emission of around 2.7 million tons of greenhouse gases, working with 52,000 family farmers -of which 25,000 are women-, and introducing better agroforestry practices on 35,000 hectares of land.
