Deputies to the National People’s Power Assembly (ANPP, parliament) and representatives of Cuban governmental entities and the United Nations (UN) discussed the implementation of national strategies on this sensitive issue.
The meeting, organized by the ANPP’s Commission on Attention to Youth, Children and Women’s Equality, was also attended by the Attorney General of the Republic, Yamila Peña, and officials from the Ministry of Justice, the People’s Supreme Court, the Cuban Women Federation (FMC), among other guests.
According to a television report, the meeting recognized achievements in the application of Cuban legal norms that prevent and punish gender violence in the family scenario.
They also discussed the implementation of the agreements of the Council of Ministers of the island on the subject and the action protocol of the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic, in support of the national program for the women’s empowerment.
The member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba and secretary general of the FMC, Teresa Amarelle, detailed the spaces created in the country to address gender violence and banish, what she said, is still a very sensitive social problem. The resident coordinator in Cuba of the United Nations system, Francisco Pichón, acknowledged that this is a type of violence that does not distinguish between countries, cultures or political systems, because it has very deep roots in patriarchal societies.
