“The availability and accessibility of critical minerals for the energy transition is crucial to meeting the goals set by the 2015 Paris Agreement,”Guterres assured in Dubai during the G77+China Leaders’ Summit, a COP28 side event.
The proposed Panel on Critical Minerals for Energy Transition will bring together governments, international organizations, industry and civil society to develop common and voluntary principles to guide the extractive industries in the coming years “on behalf of justice and sustainability,” the UNSG advanced.
“We need a fair and equitable transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy. The very existence of some countries in this room depends on it,” the senior representative said.
COP28 must commit countries to triple renewable energy capacity, double energy efficiency and bring clean energy to all by 2030, Guterres insisted.
