Cuba’s response to HIV/AIDS makes progress

SIDA-Lazo-Rojo
Havana, Dec 1 (Prensa Latina) Cuba celebrates World AIDS Day this Friday with tangible results thanks to a program with multiple actors in the health sector and the work in the communities.

Deputy Public Health Minister Carilda Peña explained that about 32,000 people live with HIV in Cuba, 16 percent of which died during the Covid-19 pandemic.

AIDS-related deaths in Cuba hovering around 6,087 are decreasing to the extent that we have gained knowledge about the detection of the disease and the progress in the retroviral therapy, Peña said.

Cuba is currently using a first-world medicine and the treatment for people with HIV has evolved from 21 or 14 pills to one pill a day, Peña said on national television broadcast.

United Nations Resident Coordinator in Cuba, Francisco Pichón, highlighted the support of several agencies he represents, while stressing the work in the communities to achieve the indicators the country currently exhibits.

Cuba also shows encouraging results addressing HIV/AIDS, based on the implementation of new laboratories and guaranteeing the treatment of all patients suffering from this disease.
