Barrientos will arrive at the Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport on a flight from Miami, and from there he will be transferred to the Peñalolén military police battalion, in the southwest of the capital.

According to lawyer Nelson Caucoto, Chile has been waiting nine years for the extradition of Barrientos, who was accused of serious human rights violations; however, he was deported for failure to comply with US immigration laws.

Chile had already presented an international arrest warrant against the accused, for which reason he will be placed at the disposal of a magistrate of the republic.

Following a case initiated by Victor Jara’s widow, in 2016 a federal court in Florida found the repressor guilty of torture and extrajudicial execution of Jara. Barrientos was also sentenced to pay 28 million dollars to the family in compensation for damages.

Barrientos was prosecuted in Chile in 2012 as the material author of the crime. The justice system recently convicted seven retired members of the Army for their responsibility in the crimes of kidnapping and killing Jara.

Victor Jara was captured by members of the army on September 12th, 1973, one day after the coup d’état led by Augusto Pinochet against the government of President Salvador Allende, and taken to the Chile Stadium along with hundreds of people. His body was found four days later in the vicinity of the Metropolitan Cemetery with signs of torture and 44 gunshot wounds.
