The request of the head of state comes after former president César Gaviria (1990-1994) announced in a letter that in the next convention of the Liberal Party he will ask to leave the government coalition.
“The Liberal convention must decide democratically if the party follows the neoliberal line like (Javier) Milei, which in my personal opinion would be an anachronism, or goes on to help build a progressive current in Colombia that takes our country out of violence and inequality,” Petro opined.
Through his profile in X, he explained that his proposal to organize a Frente Amplio between the Historic Pact, the Green Party, which is in the same dilemma as liberalism; liberalism and the forces that want to join under the objective of peace, progress and democracy, is more relevant than ever.
He commented that these forces achieved a majority in local elections, already won the presidency in 2022 and can win the presidency again in 2026.
“Peace and the proposed social changes are on the way. It is time to deepen them. A profoundly democratic and equitable Colombia is the true path to Peace”, the president emphasized.
Gaviria has shown his opposition to Petro’s proposed reforms, which seek that the majority of the population, especially the most historically disadvantaged, have access to their rights in areas such as health, education, land, housing, among others.
