On his X account, the head of State described Sergio Rodríguez, who died suddenly, as a fervent Cuban, a thorough revolutionary and a scientist who devoted himself, body and soul, to agricultural sciences.
Born in the municipality of Guayos, in Sancti Spíritus province, 75-year-old Rodríguez held the title of Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba, was a lawmaker at the National People’s Power Assembly, and the Doctor Honoris Causa degree in Agricultural Sciences from the Marta Abreu Central University of Las Villas.
The remains of Sergio, founder and director of the Tropical Viands Research Institute (INIVIT), was buried on Monday in the cemetery of Placetas, a municipality that is 35 kilometers from this city. He was accompanied by hundreds of people, who also attended his mortuary honors at the Camacho funeral home in Santa Clara.
Cuban Agriculture Minister Ydael Pérez told Prensa Latina on Monday that Sergio Rodríguez was a giant man, a practical scientist, a man of the countryside and the people, a great revolutionary and a tireless worker, who showed his discoveries and taught with his example.
Former Minister of Agriculture Gustavo Rodríguez, in turn, pointed out that he had met Sergio when he was a student at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Central Marta Abreu University of Las Villas.
