Dr. Luis Enrique Pérez, head of the medical brigade, told Prensa Latina that during the ceremony, local political and health authorities acknowledged the work done since the Cuban specialists, “worthy followers of Fidel’s ideas,” arrived in this country on December 28, 2022.
Lucia di Furia, health director of Reggio Calabria, Polistena’s Mayor Michele Tripodi, members of the Health Committee and hospital directors of that locality and those of Gioia Tauro, Locri, and Melito Porto di Salvo, where the 51 doctors of this first group are working, attended the event held on Sunday.
Roberto Occhiuto, president of Calabria, and Cuban Ambassador to Italy, Mirta Granda, also referred in a phone call to the excellent work done by the team of Cuban doctors in this first year of hard and intense work, which has led to a significant improvement in health indicators in that area of the country.
This solidarity assistance provided by Cuban health professionals continues the contribution provided by the Henry Reeve Medical Contingent’s brigades in the northern cities of Crema and Turin, Italy, during the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
That cooperation is a sign of the humanist principles of the Cuban Revolution instilled by its historic leader, Commander-In-Chief Fidel Castro, stressed Pérez. He also expressed that this recognition in Calabria, seven years after Fidel’s death on November 25, 2016, is a worthy tribute to his memory.
