Cuban business group promotes light industry

Havana, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) The Light Industry Business Group, GEMPIL, is betting on a substantial boost to this sector in Cuba as authorities are looking for solutions to the country's economic problems.

A Cubadebate report says that the company has a main office, 27 state-owned companies, 11 joint ventures (three of which are located in the Mariel Special Development Zone), and a Cuban trading company.

The article points out that a few days from its 11th anniversary, the Group has become a leader in developing the national economy. The sector gives life to companies that contrast their experience and prestige in the market.

GEMPIL’s workshops and factories manufacture hygiene articles, cosmetics, textiles, graphics, tanneries, leather, mattresses, sacks, ropes, footwear, saddlery, furniture, paints, varnishes, matches, candles, plastic products, and sports equipment.

Group President Mirla C. Díaz stated that beyond its social objective, Cuba’s economic conditions have led GEMPIL to undergo a productive transformation in which comprehensive development strengthens the links with other economic stockholders.
