The Ministry explained that the decision was made after studying the experience obtained during the special military operation in Ukraine.
The new systems will enter service in the reactive artillery brigades and later on in the artillery regiments of motorized rifle and tank divisions.
The Tornado-S system (9K515 according to the GRAU index) can strike targets with great precision at a range of up to 120 kilometers (or up to 200km using a missile tested in 2020), that is why experts point out that the use of this system will allow Russian artillery to attack more often targets behind the enemy lines .
Based on specialist informaations, this change will gain a certain parity with the US-made HIMARS systems. “The Tornado-S should have a wider range of ammunition than the Uragan, including powerful cluster projectiles,” he said. “This will allow carrying out effective strikes against area targets and lightly armored vehicles. As for the HIMARS, the Tornado-S will be capable of using a high-precision cluster missile to destroy it,” he added.
Military expert, Viktor Murakhovski said that the Tornado-S system should complement the Iskander tactical-operational complexes, which “have greater range, attack vertically and have a more powerful warhead.”
