Damascus, Nov 22 (Prensa Latina) The legacy and thoughts of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, were highlighted on Wednesday in an event organized by the Cuban Embassy and held at the National Library in this capital.

Attending the activity were, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ahmad Bosutaji, Deputy Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh, Secretary General of the United Communist Party Najem Eddin Juret, senior officers of the Army, the Armed Forces, ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Damascus, and representatives of the Palestinian forces and parties, in addition to a crowd of young people and students.

Cuban Ambassador to Syria, Luis Mariano Fernández Rodríguez, said in his remarks that the tribute for the anniversary of the Commander-in-Chief’s death is not and will not be one of sadness because his ideas and legacy of social justice are currently present more than ever in each of those who fight for a better world.

The diplomat referred to Fidel’s exceptional speech before the United Nations General Assembly in 1979, his defense of the just struggle of the Palestinian people, and his support for their inalienable rights, including the right of return, self-determination, and the establishment of an independent State with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The head of the diplomatic mission stressed the importance of Fidel’s historic visit to Syria in 2001, his support for this nation’s struggle for sovereignty and independence, and the close relationship between the leader of the Cuban Revolution and former Syrian President Hafiz al-Assad.

Deputy Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh said that Fidel is a figure for his principles and his support for the resistance movements and the struggle for self-determination, especially the Palestinian cause.

An audiovisual material that summarized the most significant moments of Fidel’s life and struggle, from the Sierra Maestra mountain range to his death, was screened as part of the tribute.

Afterward, a wreath was laid at the monument built for former President Hafiz al-Assad, where Fidel paid tribute to this Syrian figure.

A photo exhibition entitled “Fidel es Fidel” (Fidel is Fidel) was also opened. It comprises a series of snapshots taken of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution during his visit to Syria and in his struggle in the Sierra Maestra mountain range.
