“Three latest Borei-A nuclear-powered submarine cruisers have joined the Navy’s combat inventory. The state trials of the Emperor Alexander III strategic missile-carrying submarine have been completed, so the share of modern ships in the Russian nuclear triad has reached 100 percent,” the defense minister noted.
Shoigu added at a Defense Ministry’s board meeting reported on the official website of the military institution that three submarines armed with Kalibr cruise missile systems will join the Russian submarine forces this year.
The Emperor Alexander III strategic nuclear-powered missile submarine carries 16 Bulava ballistic missiles and advanced torpedo armament.
These vessels are fourth-generation subs operational in the Russian Pacific and Northern Fleets. Three Borei-A strategic nuclear-powered submarines operate in the Russian Navy, another submarine has completed trials, and three others are currently under construction.
