The 14th International Meeting of Economists on Globalization and Development Problems discussed, among others, the NIEO adverse implications, whose negative effects fall on developing nations and the majorities excluded from progress, countries that should be the object and essential goal of that “new order.”
From such plurality of thought, the Meeting analyzed the current trends of globalization, the problems of development and its mutations which, in essence, are representative issues of the internationalization of capital.
The encounter gathered some 130 foreigners face-to-face participants and 21 attendees in virtual modality, from 47 countries, and 521 Cubans examined for four days -from November 14 to 17-, in the Havana International Conference Center (HICC), 13 thematic axes that summarize the fundamental problems that afflict humanity.
During the closing ceremony, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel stressed the importance of this type of plural debate, sometimes polemic, but open to the most diverse points of view on issues that need light and are the result of the processes associated with globalization and an impact on development.
According to the Academic Committee of the Meeting, participants noted that among the new trends are disputes over the central role of the States, and the mutations of global hegemony, the latter in two probable scenarios.
One would be the weakness of the process of capital accumulation in the United States; and the other the emergence of the China-India-Russia axis as a hegemonic contender, always with the premise that the imperial system will not fall under its own weight, but will depend on social struggles.
Debating on ideas is a principle of these meetings that we owe to their main promoter, the President said referring to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro. He realized very early the importance of the process described above by the scholars and, in addition, he systematically put forward his theoretical arguments, always from the perspective of the exploited and the excluded.
Regarding the fragmentation of social sciences, researchers warned that it represents a strategy of power, since “capitalism is integral and must be thought of as a system”. Therefore, a new interpretation with its trends and countertrends poses a challenge for the intellectuals of critical thought.
They assured the crisis is part of the contradictory essence of this system, but with multiple manifestations, deepened in the Covid-19 pandemic and with repercussions in all economies, particularly in developing countries.
These crises are accompanied by the offensive of capital and its modes of action, such as the modification of all possible activities and the substantial reduction of the action spheres of the State, a phenomenon expressed in an offensive against labor, nature and society. This is a response of capitalism to the action of popular forces.
The new multinationals were an element of analysis from the perspective of another type of globalization, in response to the systemic crisis of capitalism and the needs of development.
In this context, the “strategy of programmed ignorance” was highlighted through mechanisms such as social media, digital platforms, Artificial Intelligence, or fake news that subtly transmit the hegemonic ideology.
