Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida emphasized this position during a bilateral meeting in the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.

During their meeting, the leaders reiterated their commitment to the principles and consensus contained in the four political documents between the two countries.

They also reaffirmed the position of advancing a mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests and advocated building constructive and stable China-Japan ties.

Xi urged the Japanese side to properly handle the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima plant into the sea, one of the most tense issues in bilateral ties.

The president called on Tokyo to take seriously legitimate concerns at home and abroad about the issue.

On several occasions, China expressed its dissatisfaction with Japan’s water discharge plan and in fact suspended imports of all aquatic products from Japan to avoid risks.

According to Beijing, the Japanese government could not prove that the ocean discharge is safe and harmless to the marine environment and people’s health.
