China and the US for managing divergences and expanding consensus

Beijing, Nov 16 (Prensa Latina) The meeting between the leaders of China and the United States sends the message that both are willing to manage divergences and expand consensus, according to an expert on the subject.

In an interview with Prensa Latina, Pan Deng, director of the Latin American Law Institute of the University of Political Sciences and Law, offered his impressions on the meeting between leaders Xi Jinping and Joe Biden within the context of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum taking place in San Francisco.

According to the analyst, the bilateral meeting also showed that both presidents are ready to assume due historical responsibility for the future of humanity. “Of course, we must also be aware that all divergences between China and the United States cannot be solved with a single meeting between the leaders, and even the time and objective environments do not provide circumstances for a short-term solution,” he stressed.

In Pan’s opinion, both nations come from two different communities in terms of their ideologies, values, levels of development, and modes of governance. “This is reflected more in cultural genes, state structure, national identity, ways of dealing with situations, and other areas of underlying logic,” he commented.

The expert noted that a certain degree of differences and conflicts between both countries is inevitable. “Therefore, we cannot avoid confrontation, we can only consider how to confront it, recognize it, and control it,” he noted.

The analyst considered that mutual understanding and awareness of communication constitute the starting point of the process. “Next, we willingly accept our own and others’ differences, and then we jointly solve the problems that arise, based on mutual respect,” he stated.

According to Pan, the expectation surrounding the meeting reflects the role that the two nations play on the international scene. “The pandemic has made our planet fragile, disorganized, and pessimistic, and the human community, eager for recovery, is forced to pause and observe the future development of China-US relations to make its own decisions,” he said.
