A note from the Milan prosecutor’s office posted on the website of Il Sole 24 Ore newspape stated that a local court approved in recent hours the sending to Algeria of Chouial Yassine, 37, who was detained in that city since August 29, accused of being linked with the extremist group Islamic State (IS).
Yassine’s arrest occurred during a police check at the Cadorna station of the Milan subway. According to the case’s file, he tried to pull out a knife from his backpack to attack authorities, while shouting Allah Akbar.
The General Investigation and Special Operations Division (DIGOS, in Italian) of the State Police verified that the detainee, who had been living in Italy for a year without documents or address, was wanted in his country, where he is accused of participating as an IS member in actions conducted in Syria and Iraq since 2015.
After completing the procedures, in coordination with the Algerian judicial authorities, Judge Francesca Vitale, president of the Fifth Section of the Milan Court of Appeal, approved the extradition order, and the alleged terrorist was moved to the San Vittore prison, where he will remain until his deportation.
