Brazil: Violence ramps up against women in DF

Brasilia, Nov 8 (Prensa Latina) A total of 13,519 cases of violence against women has occurred from January to September in the Federal District (DF), a figure accounting for a 6.3% upturn over the same period in 2022.

Such a figure was unfolded in the recent research by the DF Secretariat of Public Security as well as the surge in cases draws attention to a recurring problem.

Aiming to curb and reduce the incidence of these events, the DF Government enacted in May the law number 7.264/2023, which provides for the application of a fine to aggressors.

The amounts vary from 500 reais (about US$ 100) to 500,000 reais (US$ 100,000), depending on aggressor’s economic capacity and the infraction.

In cases of violence involving the use of firearms, for example, the fine is increased by two thirds, and for repeated offenses in the last five years, the penalty is doubled. The law further establishes that the aggressor shall pay for the costs of the care provided to the victim by public agencies.
