José Mujica says scandal affects Uruguay’s image

Montevideo, Nov 6 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay looks like a banana republic, former President Jose Mujica deemed on Monday in view of the scandal in force here, after the delivery of a passport to drug trafficker Sebastian Marset.

Mujica reacted to the resignations of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and of the Interior, Francisco Bustillo and Luis Alberto Heber, respectively.

Also the undersecretary of the Interior Guillermo Maciel and presidential Advisor Roberto Lafluf, after evidence given by former Deputy FM Carolina Ache, who resigned last December to prosecutor Alejandro Machado.

“We look more like a banana republic than like that Uruguay that everyone tended to respect despite its limitations and that differentiated itself institutionally in this convulsive continent,” Mujica said in an interview with Radio Universal.

“I listened to other news programs in the world, and Uruguay has been left in a very bad position and has sowed a set of doubts that will take time to be removed,” he expressed.

In his statements, Mujica considered that in Saturday’s televised appearance, President Luis Lacalle Pou gave the impression of wanting to “turn the page” with the resignations accepted and the replacements announced.

“There is a very serious fact which is that, consciously or not, the Executive Branch went to Parliament, and hid the truth to sustain a truth that was unsustainable,” the Broad Front’s leader pointed out on appearances to the Legislative of former ministers Bustillo and Heber.
