Cuba: University of Camagüey turns 56

Camagüey, Nov 6 (Prensa Latina) When the University of Camagüey was founded in November 1967, nobody could have imagined that today the institution would play a key role in Cuba's scientific development.

The first university founded by the Cuban Revolution is celebrating a new anniversary and it focuses on achieving the category of Excellence, granted by the National Accreditation Board.

Precisely, the professors of an institute that has won some fifty Cuban Academy of Sciences awards since 1967 highlighted the idea of becoming more like the nation and its needs.

In that regard, University Rector Santiago Lajes emphasized at a faculty meeting “that the priority is to be more efficient in the scientific policy with the center’s 14 lines of research.”

The rector pointed out that the different careers should strengthen the territory, and gave the example of municipalities such as Nuevitas, an industrial city, “where engineering should yield its maximum results.”

However, the center’s research lines go beyond that, as shown by the recent inauguration of the Artificial Intelligence Institute in Hebei, China, with the participation of specialists from Camagüey.

The acknowledgement of the talents of the University of Camagüey has reached an international scope and the examples are diverse and varied with collaboration projects with counterparts in Latin America and Europe.

The participation of 18 professors in various academic networks exemplifies the quality of the academics of the University, which is a member of the Ibero-American University Association of Postgraduate Studies (AUIP), recognized by UNESCO, and whose objective is the promotion and development of postgraduate and doctoral studies in Ibero-America.

Precisely within the AUIP stands out the Strengthening Internationalization Project (Forint) between European and Latin American institutions, which has allowed the University of Camagüey to make progress in the increase and signing of agreements with universities in different parts of the world to achieve internationalization.

However, every road begins at home, and this is shown by the actions in support of social projects in Cuba’s largest province.

One of the examples was precisely a couple of years ago, when Cuba engaged in the fight against Covid-19, and the center served as a space for isolation and care for patients affected by the pandemic.

At present, the prominence of the university even reaches the Cuban Parliament with one of its members, Laura Bacallao, a student of Journalism, who is a lawmaker.

With many challenges still to be met, the University of Camagüey continues to be a flagship for the social, economic and cultural welfare of one of the key provinces for Cuba’s development, and which sees in science and academia the path to the nation’s sovereignty and prosperity.
