Paraguayan workers demand social security improvements

Asuncion, Nov 6 (Prensa Latina) Paraguayan employees, many of them women workers, demanded today improvements such as the reinstatement of pregnant or breastfeeding women dismissed from their jobs, compliance with social security and Christmas bonuses.

Unionists and employees from various sectors, gathered in front of the Palace of Justice, denounced the frequent failures to comply with the Labor Code on maternity and the evasion of payments by the Social Security Institute (IPS), reports ABC Color.

“We have workers without social security, we ask the Labor Court to communicate of its motion the evasion of these aspects of social security,” declared the lawyer and spokesman of the protest Juan Jose Bernis, quoted by the publication.

The representative of the protesters before the IPS lamented the “lack of training of the prosecutors of the criminal department, who do not understand the labor jurisdiction and do not take our denunciations for evasion into account”.

The demonstration followed the dismissal of a breastfeeding woman who was denied reinstatement to her job by Judge Greta Aquino “under the pretext -underlined the lawyer- that the breastfeeding certificate was presented after her dismissal.”
