Cuban PM arrives in Beijing to continue official visit to China

Beijing, Nov 6 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Prime Minister Miguel Marrero arrived in this capital on Sunday to continue an official visit that began in Shanghai, where he met with Chinese authorities and business people.

As part of his agenda, the Cuban head of Government will hold talks here with top authorities from China and the Communist Party, as well as with local entrepreneurs.

Marrero participated and gave a speech on Saturday at the opening of the 6th China International Import Expo (CIIE), in Shanghai, where he called for fair, inclusive, multilateral and mutually beneficial international cooperation against unilateralism and protectionism.

He also emphasized the importance of meetings like these to create new forms of business among all economic stockholders globally.

Marrero stressed that for more than 60 years, Cuba has been subjected to an unprecedented commercial, economic and financial blockade by the United States and opportunistically intensified even during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He stressed that Cuba will continue to promote its own path to economic development and highlighted the important consensus reached by the two countries’ top leaders in this regard.

During his stay in Shanghai, Marrero met his Chinese counterpart, Li Qiang, and both highlighted the traditional friendship that unites the two countries and signed cooperation agreements.

Li underlined the consensus reached between Presidents Xi Jinping and Miguel Díaz-Canel regarding the joint construction of a China-Cuba community with a shared future, “which is a strategic choice in accordance with the fundamental interests of the two countries.”

“China, as always, will firmly support Cuba in the socialist construction and in its opposition to interference,” Li assured.

Marrero, in turn, advocated deepening cooperation in various fields, promoting collaboration within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and promoting the continuous development of relations between China and the Caribbean countries.

The agreements signed by the two leaders cover several sectors of bilateral cooperation such as transportation, biotechnology, agri-food and digital television.

As part of his agenda, the Cuban prime minister traveled to Zhejiang, where he met with the secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, Yi Lianhong, to review bilateral ties.

Marrero visited the City Brain, a technological command center in the southern city of Hangzhou, known for its innovation and for being the headquarters of leading Chinese companies like Alibaba. During his visit to Zhejiang, Marrero met with leading business people from the China-Latin America Industrial Park (CLAIP) platform and learned about their particularities.

After returning to Shanghai, he met with Dilma Rouseff, director of the New Development Bank, one of the main financial institutions of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
