Cuban journalists debate on new media model

Ricardo-Ronquillo
Havana, Nov 3 (Prensa Latina) Around 270 media professionals are debating on the process of transformations underway to make the Cuban press model more effective, under the motto Changes yes, revolutionary changes.

On the closing day of the 11th Congress of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC), chaired by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, UPEC President Ricardo Ronquillo stressed the importance of the issue and the scope of these changes.

He emphasized that the recent approval of a Communication Law, and the existence of a policy on the subject, will contribute to solving the serious structural systems in the country’s press system, which has the necessary legal support now.

The rules of the communication game have changed, and it is necessary to adapt so that the system gains credibility among the population and contributes more effectively to the country’s development efforts, said Ronquillo, who described the adaptation of a media model to the current needs of the Cuban Revolution as a matter of national security.

The UPEC leader pointed out that the experiment being done for the management of public media seeks to rescue the economic function of the media, together with the symbolic one, and to create the adequate framework to guarantee self-regulation and more autonomy, which must count on the creative contribution of the professionals from the editorial offices, he addded.

He reaffirmed the urgency of speeding up changes to move to a multiplatform vision, appropriate to the times, and to base the transformation of the communication model on science and innovation. jg/arm/mem/ev
