SICA demands an end to US blockade against Cuba at the UN

United Nations, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) We demand an immediate end to Cuba's arbitrary and unjust inclusion on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list, the ambassador of El Salvador, Egriselda López, said on Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of the Central American Integration System (SICA) at the debate on Cuba’s draft resolution, entitled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” at the United Nations General Assembly, the diplomat called for the reversal of the measure that increases the impact of the blockade against the Cuban people.

She stressed that from Cuba we only know solidarity, warmth and humanity in its help to Central American countries.

López pointed out that Cuba continues to be the object of an unfair blockade that obstructs its development with illegal measures that are contrary to the UN Charter.

She said, as an example, that during the Covd-19 pandemic, Washington prevented Cubans from buying supplies to manufacture vaccines and oxygen to treat seriously ill patients, an action that she described as an “abusive and harmful” policy.

She indicated that it is not possible for Cuba to acquire medicines to treat children suffering from cancer due to the blockade, and called for an end to this policy.

The head of Salvadorian diplomacy pointed out that there is no motivation in the United States to eliminate the blockade against Cuba, and urged both states to reach consensus at the negotiating table to end this policy.

The SICA member States expect that in the near future, instead of passing resolutions condemning these policies, we will dedicate ourselves to praising the work for peace, she added.

Ending the blockade against Cuba is the only way to create a present and an inclusive future for all, she went on to say.
