Debate on US blockade against Cuba reaches UN General Assembly

United Nations, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations General Assembly is meeting in a plenary session to debate and vote on a draft resolution that calls for an end of the United States' blockade against Cuba.

More than 50 speakers will take the floor on Wednesday, when the forum is meeting for the thirty-first time to analyze the impact of Washington’s blockade against Cuba, which is considered the main obstacle to the Caribbean island’s development.

The draft resolution, pursuant to the UN General Assembly’s Resolution 77/7 and entitled Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba, will be voted by the UN Member States on Thursday.

On that day, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez will also address the forum.

The project, presented in October by the head of Cuban diplomacy, estimates the damages caused by that policy in the order of 4.867 billion dollars, between March 1, 2022, and February 28, 2023.

In total, the economic damages based on current prices amount to 159.84 billion dollars, and to more than 1.337 trillion, taking into account the exchange rate of the dollar against the value of gold in the international market.

The effects of the compendium of measures exceed 405 million dollars per month, equivalent to one million dollars every two hours.

According to the draft resolution, the above-mentioned period was marked by the continuous and deliberate exertion of maximum pressure by provisions established during the Donald Trump administration (2016-2020) and the validity of the laws that make up this system of unilateral coercive measures.

At the same time, Washington policy on Cuba has confirmed the inertia of President Joe Biden’s administration to promote real progress in US-Cuba relations.

Since 1992, the international community has ratified its rejection of this policy, reinforced to unprecedented levels during the Covid-19 pandemic with the marked purpose of strangling Cuba’s economy to cause a regime change.

In 2022, Cuba’s resolution at the UN General Assembly was approved with 185 votes in favor and two against (United States and Israel).
