Among the most attractive sectors, tourism stands out, the president recalled, after talks here with her German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

“We are ready to start official negotiations to see how we can deal with the colonial heritage in our country”, the Tanzanian dignitary said.

In Steinmeier’s opinion, “it is important that we overcome this dark chapter, that we overcome it together,” hence the expressed willingness to repatriate cultural goods and human remains, when skulls and bones of former Tanzanian inhabitants still remain in German museums.

According to Tanzanian sources, some 300,000 people were killed during the so-called Maji-Maji War from 1905 to 1907 as a result of colonial excesses.

The task now is to strengthen the good relations built up over several decades and to orient them towards the future; for “there is still potential for expanding trade and investment,” the Tanzanian president pointed out.

At the same time, the German head of State confirmed his interest in boosting bilateral economic ties, hence his trip accompanied by a business delegation willing to explore new business opportunities.
