Curfew imposed in Amhara region, Ethiopia, modified

fentaw
Addis Ababa, Oct 22 (Prensa Latina) The curfew imposed in the Amhara region, northern Ethiopia, was modified after the improvement of security, peace and stability, the Central Command Post of the State of Emergency announced today .

This was confirmed at a press conference by the head of the Communications Service of that locality, a member of the command post, Mengesha Fentaw, stating that the federal and regional security forces, as well as the towns, made a concerted effort to recover normality.

Fentaw specified that the new curfew hours imposed on the movement of people in the cities of Bahir Dar, Gondar and Debre-Berhan went from 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. (local time). However, restrictions on vehicle movement remain in force.

Depending on progress of peace and stability, the command post’s decisions and the situation of other cities and areas in the region will be revealed to the public in due time, he added.

He highlighted that in most of the region’s major cities people move peacefully and government service sectors, private companies and development companies provide their services.

For this reason, in recent times they peacefully celebrated holidays and festivals, high-level conferences and trainings, he emphasized.

He revealed that currently the national defense forces are handing over the areas with relative peace and normality to the Amhara security forces to continue in the remaining areas.

The House of People’s Representatives (parliament) approved the state of emergency declared by the Council of Ministers on August 4 to control the armed conflict between regional forces and armed groups belonging to the FANO militias and guarantee peace.

One day after the measure was decreed, Justice Minister Gedion Timothewos confirmed that it will remain in force for six months.
