The number of starving families almost doubled compared to last year in this country plunged into chaos since the beginning of the conflagration between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan, president of the Sovereign Transitional Council, and the leader of the Rapid Support Forces militia, Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.
The death toll, according to conservative figures, exceeded 9,000, mostly non-belligerent civilians, the number of wounded is several times higher and the number of internally displaced persons exceeds 7,100,000, the two UN agencies certified in a joint statement.
About 700,000 children are suffering from acute malnutrition and another 100,000 children suffering from the same condition aggravated by other complications need urgent medical treatment to save their lives, the report added.
The Sudanese sufferings are exacerbated by the fact that approximately 42 percent of the population faces high levels of food insecurity, particularly residents of the capital, Darfur, North Kordofan and West Kordofan.
Sudan’s population is over 48 million, according to current year estimates.
