Cuban project to contribute to reforesting mangroves

Manglar
Matanzas, Cuba, Oct 14 (Prensa Latina) Contributing to reforesting mangroves and protecting coastal environments and communities in the Cuban provinces of Matanzas, Villa Clara and Cienfuegos has become the purpose of a new environmental project that is in its phase of preparation.

According to www.acn.cu, the project resulted from the Western-Central Territorial Workshop: READINESS II, held in the coastal resort of Varadero, since as the average sea level rises, protected areas, human settlements and hydrographic basins might be affected, hence the usefulness of the project to get funds from the Green Climate Fund.

Mónica de la Caridad Monzón, an expert from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in Matanzas, explained that the project is aimed at planting mangrove areas in order to stop saline intrusion, which is harmful to agriculture near the coast.

Studies of feasibility, environmental impact, danger, vulnerabilities and risks (PVR) are necessary before undertaking comprehensive actions to create capacities and contribute to the preservation of the environment, Monzón said.

The expert, who is also responsible for the Task Life, a State Plan to confront climate change in Cuba, on the territory, explained that next year the project will be presented for approval, which could benefit coastal areas in Matanzas, Villa Clara and Cienfuegos.
