Venezuelan foreign minister praises Cuba’s election to UNHRC

Caracas, Oct 11 (Prensa Latina) The Foreign Minister of Venezuela, Yván Gil, considered the election of Cuba as a member of the Human Rights Council (HRC) of the United Nations to be good news for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Gil stressed on social networks that Cuba was elected for the 2024-2026 period. “Its voice and vote will defend our struggles for social justice and respect for human rights,” the Venezuelan Minister for Foreign Affairs highlighted.

The re-election of Cuba to the Human Rights Council is a recognition by the international community of the humanist work of the Revolution, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said. “We will continue on our path towards building a more just society for all,” he stated.

The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba Josefina Vidal said that Cuba’s election is a great recognition to what “it has done for its people and for many others in the world”, despite the enormous challenges it has to face in defending its rights to be free, sovereign and independent. “And we will continue doing it!” she stressed.

Cuba was elected to occupy one of the 47 seats of the Council, obtaining 146 votes in favor on Tuesday’s election, convened by the 78th General Assembly.

For the first time, Cuba held a position in that council for the defense of human rights in 2006 and until 2009, then in the periods, as follows: 2009-2012, 2014-2016, 2017-2019, and 2021-2023.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel thanked those who showed their confidence “in our commitment to continue defending the legitimate interests of developing nations.”
