The most uncomfortable issue revolved around information that President Joe Biden would restart the construction of the wall on the border with Texas, after promising that not a single centimeter would be built. This was settled with explanations from the Secretary of Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, that there was no change in that policy and there was incorrect information.
Mayorkas made it clear, that the work was budgeted by the government of former President Donald Trump and must be complied with by law, and they did not allow the money already approved to be diverted to another objective other than the one for which it was designated. According to him, the wall will not be built, but instead, the money will be used for technological expenses to improve the detection of migrants.
The truth is that the Mexican side was satisfied with the explanation and praised that President Biden remains firm in his position, since, according to Foreign Minister Bárcena, migration is not stopped with walls but with bridges.
Bárcena recalled that this renewed dynamic of security collaboration between Mexico and the United States began two years ago, which gave rise to the Bicentennial Understanding, which includes a High-Level Security Dialogue and another High-Level Economic Dialogue, which was held last Friday and also chaired by Blinken.
She added that this meeting confirms the will to join forces in the face of shared threats through these mechanisms to implement joint actions with respect to the sovereignty of both countries.
Regarding illegal arms trafficking, Bárcena said that she urged the United States to reinforce its actions so as to prevent weapons from reaching Mexico and falling into the hands of criminals.
