Cuban tribute was for First Lieutenant Yohandra Suarez Lopez and fighter Luis Alejandro Llerena Martinez who lost their lives on Tuesday during their rescue work after a building collapsed in the municipality of Old Havana.
The merits of both rescuers were praised during a ceremony led by the member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and Interior Minister Major General Lazaro Alberto Alvarez.
Suarez Lopez was the only woman in the country in the position of first rescue technician; she held two decorations for distinguished service in the Interior Ministry, and the medal for 10 years of uninterrupted service in that military institution.
Likewise, the exemplary woman had been awarded with the Bravery Medal, bestowed by Cuba´s Council of State for her outstanding work after the explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in Havana in May 2022.
Meanwhile, Llerena Martinez was awarded the Medal for Bravery during service for his performance in the fire at the supertanker base in the western Matanzas province on August 5, 2022.
