El Salvador warns of severe climate effect

San Salvador, Oct 4 (Prensa Latina) El Salvador authorities warned today that during the year 2024 the country may be affected by a severe reduction in rainfall due to the El Niño phenomenon.

The director of the General Directorate of Civil Protection, Luis Amaya, defined the crisis that could come as a ‘Super Niño’, which will represent a drastic reduction in rainfall.

We are going to have very little, but very little rain next year.

From today until November, December next year we would be influenced’ by the phenomenon, he said.

This week the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Marn) advanced incidences of the climatic anomaly on the country.

We are no longer in transition, since June El Niño phenomenon has been present, that is to say, this is a warming of the Pacific Ocean.

We would be expecting the year 2024 to be fully influenced by the phenomenon’, warned Minister Fernando Lopez.

Specialized organizations and agencies such as the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States, warned that the phenomenon will persist during the northern hemisphere winter of 2023 until 2024.

There is a 71 percent probability of at least one strong ‘El Niño’ event in the short term, this one between November to January, which will have a devastating effect on the country’s food security, because if there is no rain, agriculture declines, experts said.
