Russia and Latin America consolidate ties in times of turbulence

St. Petersburg, Russia, Oct 4 (Prensa Latina) Russia and Latin America are currently consolidating ties in times of turbulence, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Wednesday.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the 6th International Forum, “Russia and Latin America in a Turbulent World: History and Perspectives,” held at St. Petersburg State University, the diplomat acknowledged that the Latin American and Caribbean region is a leading trend for Moscow within its foreign policy.

“This forum is a continuation of Russia’s marathon of actions to consolidate mutually beneficial relations and cooperation,” Ryabkov stressed.

He also stated that this event serves as a platform so that the voice of Latin America be heard louder, “without a doubt, they have a preponderant role in consolidating a multipolar world and make it clear that the region is not the backyard of its northern neighbor,” the deputy foreign minister said.

Ryabkov read out a message sent to the participants by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who described the forum as a sincere and non-politicized exchange (that witnesses the current tectonic changes), and as a way to strengthen the bonds of mutual trust.

Dmitry Rozental, Acting Director of the Institute of Latin America at the Russian Academy of Sciences, acknowledged that Latin America sees this academic event as one of the most important forums in Russia, due to its value in consolidating a long-standing friendship.

The 6th International Forum, “Russia and Latin America in a Turbulent World: History and Perspectives,” brings together 800 participants from about 20 countries from October 4 to 6 to understand the new realities of the Latin American political and socio-economic processes.
