Palestinians suffer serious water quality crisis

Ramallah, Oct 2 (Prensa Latina) The Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) reported today that only 40 percent of the Palestinian population has access to water managed safely and free of contamination. The entity detailed in a statement that 66 percent of the inhabitants of the West Bank consume potable liquid, a figure that drops to only four percent in the Gaza Strip.

According to PCBS, the situation is worse in the rural areas of the occupied territories than in the cities.

Only 59 percent of Palestinian families live in homes connected to a sewage network, 28 percent to cesspools and 12 percent to closed pits for sewage disposal, it said.

The Palestinian Water Authority recently denounced the crisis in several West Bank towns and villages as a result of the discriminatory policies of Israel, who controls more than 85 percent of the water resources in the area.

This is the main reason for the large deficit in most governorates, a situation that is worsening every year, the agency warned.

In the Gaza Strip, the situation is worse, as the authorities estimate that more than 97 percent of the liquid pumped from the coastal basin does not meet the standards of the World Health Organization.

According to various data, the consumption of this resource by Israelis is six times higher than that of the Palestinians.
