Russia ratifies agreement to assist CSTO troops

Moscow, Sep 29 (Prensa Latina) Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that ratifies the agreement on logistical and medical supplies to the troops of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the Kremlin press service reported on Friday.

The original document was penned in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, on September 16, 2021. The objective is to improve the legal regulation of logistical and medical support to the CSTO forces.

The document establishes that the members will carry out a coordinated military-technical policy to supply the Organization’s troops with modern weapon systems and military and special equipment that are similar or compatible.

The CSTO troops will receive weapons, equipment and material resources at the expense of the funds of the member countries, which will be allocated within the framework of interstate programs and at the expense of the assistance that the States can provide to one other.

The agreement also contains certain issues related to the support provided by medical units of the Defense Ministries of the CSTO member countries, which will provide assistance to wounded servicemen. In the event of their absence, other medical organizations will do so, regardless of their affiliation.

Russia ratified this agreement with two reservations. The first is that when CSTO troops are deployed on its territory, medical units from the Russian Ministry of Defense will provide medical assistance to the allied troops.

The second implies that if these medical units are not deployed in a Russian region, such an assistance will be provided by the medical services of other CSTO member countries.
