Indigenous authorities in Guatemala call for protests

indigenas-guatemala
Guatemala City, Sep 28 (Prensa Latina) The Council of Indigenous Authorities of the recognized 48 Cantons of the western department of Totonicapán called today for a peaceful protest in several points of Guatemala next Monday.

Through a letter published in social networks, the ancestral organization explained, without defining places, that they will reiterate the request for the resignation of the Attorney General of the nation, Consuelo Porras, and the head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Impunity (FECI), Rafael Curruchiche.

They also expressed their disagreement with legal initiatives that threaten the health and wellbeing of Guatemalans, such as transgenic seeds and oil exploitation by the French-British transnational Perenco.

This company benefits from a 25-year extension to continue operating within one of the natural reserve areas in the Petén, and the ruling alliance in Congress, based on a modification to the Hydrocarbons Law, seeks to extend the contract.

The 48 Cantons of Totonicapán called the rest of the indigenous peoples, as well as citizens in general to join the action and detailed that they will take to the streets starting at 5:30 am, local time, to remain for an indefinite period of time.

“This demonstration aims to express our concern and seek solutions to important issues that affect the democracy of our country,” the text emphasized.
