This Tuesday will be dedicated entirely to Chapter V, where the guidelines regarding the functioning of the Government and the State Administration are contemplated.

The council, dominated by the extremist Republican Party and its allies from Chile Vamos, approved on Tuesday the reduction of the number of members of the Chamber of Deputies, from the current 155 seats to 138.

Mandatory gender parity among legislators was ended during the same session, which was considered an achievement for women, who are usually in a minority in the legislative body.

In previous days, the Republicans imposed a number of regulations described as regressive in terms of individual or social guarantees. These include the prohibition of voluntary termination of pregnancy, if the mother’s life is in danger, if there are fetal malformations or if it is the result of rape. The right to strike and the powers of unions and other trade organizations are also restricted, and the privatization of health, education, and the administration of pension funds, among other services, will receive constitutional status.

Lautaro Carmona, recently elected president of the Communist Party of Chile, affirmed that in the council the view of the most privileged sector of society is being imposed. “They want us to install their moral codes… what is going on is the idea of a sort of deepening or almost reestablishing of neoliberal capitalism in the most extreme expressions of the case”, assured the communist leader.

Senator Paulina Vodanovic, president of the Socialist Party, said that a “Kastitution” is being made instead of a Constitution, alluding to far-right Republican leader José Antonio Kast.

Even very conservative sectors of the right, such as the mayor of the commune of Providencia, Evelyn Matthei, stated that they would not risk their political capital to support a Constitution like this.
