Venezuelan Foreign Minister calls to refound the United Nations

United Nations, Sep 24 (Prensa Latina) The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, Yván Gil, called yesterday to refound the United Nations (UN) and to strengthen it so that it is a democratic institution.

When speaking in the debate of the 78th period of sessions of the UN General Assembly, the senior diplomat stated that this body, created in 1945, “has not managed to fulfill its founding purpose” and now, he noted, the world has much greater and serious challenges.

He mentioned among them the unilateralism of countries that, reproducing colonial and imperial logic, “attempt to impose themselves” above the principles enshrined in the founding Charter of the multilateral organization.

The solution to the new challenges that humanity faces today cannot be achieved until the consolidation of inclusive multilateralism, the democratization of international relations and a true pluripolar world are achieved, he expressed.

In the opinion of the Bolivarian Foreign Minister, like many of the Agencies, Programs and Funds of the system, the United Nations “does not comply with its mandate” and ends up being instrumentalized by the interests of the United States and its accomplices.

In that sense, he called for strengthening the organization so that it is a “democratic institution”, where all its members have a voice and participate in decision-making on equal terms.

Gil considered it essential to resume the practice of consensus, including the General Assembly, which presupposes ending the zero-sum mentality and instead fostering a win-win vision, he noted.

He meant that this will allow effective responses to collective interests based on cooperation, tolerance and understanding.

The head of Venezuelan diplomacy stressed that the UN “cannot continue functioning as it is doing” and asked: how many resolutions must the General Assembly approve to put an end, once and for all, to the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade by more than 60 years to “sister Cuba”.

How many more resolutions must be adopted by this Assembly or the Security Council, whose decisions are legally binding, so that the rights of Palestine are truly respected as a free and independent State, he added.

He stressed that how much more time will have to pass to “realize that under the current system it is impossible to achieve the proposed goals.”

The Venezuelan minister emphasized that the refoundation of the United Nations implies paying off the historical debt with decolonization and pointed out that our people were victims of the crimes of colonization and slavery.
