During a speech at the fourth ministerial meeting of the Group of Friends in Defense of the United Nations Charter, in New York, Gil affirmed that this multilateral organization “is not a club of members with ideological affinities”.
He pointed out that it is an intergovernmental organization in which “everyone is equal and each national contribution is essential” to achieve the objectives that motivated the establishment of the organization in 1945, especially the maintenance of international peace and security.
The high-ranking official considered that these issues should be a priority on the agenda of the Group’s member countries and assured that only through a truly inclusive multilateralism will they be able to confront the threats and challenges facing humanity.
He mentioned the environmental, energy, food and economic crises, the “long-awaited reform” of the international financial architecture and the need to preserve international security balances.
The Minister stressed that the Group of Friends has a historic task today, as it is called upon to promote concrete advances in the promotion, strengthening and defense of the United Nations Charter.
At the meeting, which was held in the context of the 78th session of the General Assembly of the multilateral organization, Gil denounced that the current system of international relations, international law and the UN “are today under attack”.
This is not mere rhetoric, but rather facts and policies that demonstrate an imminent danger, he remarked.
In this sense, he alluded to the systematic aggressions of those who present themselves as champions of multilateralism, but with their actions demonstrate the opposite and insist on dividing and categorizing countries according to their political proximities and interests of neocolonial and geostrategic domination.
