Guatemalan President Giammattei calls for the UN reform

United Nations, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei on Tuesday called at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) for a UN reform ahead of the pressing need to solutions to food insecurity, migration.

At the 78th session, Giammattei noted the mobilization of people fleeing their nations’ crises due to insecurity, lack of food, as well as economic issues.

“We must achieve a United Nations to seek peace and human development,” Giammattei remarked, while calling for respect for international law, peaceful settlement of differences and the self-determination of peoples.

The president described the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes as one of the foremost UN pillars, and reaffirmed Guatemala’s commitment to the common goal of a world free of weapons.

Giammattei called on all nuclear weapon States, including the five permanent members of the UN Council, to achieve nuclear disarmament, the leader stressed.

He reaffirmed Guatemala’s firm commitment and solidarity for the breakthrough and prosperity of the Haitian people, “who are at risk from a multidimensional crisis,” he underscored.
