During UNGA general debates, the Portuguese leader also stated that these organizations ‘are completely divorced from today’s reality’ and do not promote development ‘based on justice and equity’.

In this regard, he harped on respect for the UN Charter, since -without it- there would be no ‘sovereignty of the States, nor human rights’; world peace; the increase in the pace of fighting off climate change as well as the fulfillment of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda.

Rebelo de Sousa expressed his country’s strong support for Brazil and India joining as permanent members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) as well as for environmental policies in favor of clean energy, biodiversity and decarbonization.

In his opinion, Lisbon promotes a new world governance with concrete solutions and financing for those who need it and, in this regard, he mentioned the recent signing of an environmental economic agreement with Cape Verde to guarantee the economic and sustainable development of that nation.

The time has come to comply with and respect international law, cooperation, the correction of the world’s injustices and the United Nations reform, without which multilateralism will not exist.
