The Commissioner for Crisis Management and Slovenian diplomat Janez Lenarcic confirmed the assistances aimed at cooperation during emergency operations in flood-hammered mountainous area.

EU member States such as Germany, Finland and Romania will provide shelter, electric generators, supplies and other materials necessary for Libya to recover following the impact of this meteorological event that caused at least 5,000 deaths and thousands of missing people.

According to the International Organization for Migration, over 30,000 people had to leave their homes as a result of the floods reported past Monday in the city of Derna.

In Derna, Libya´s fourth largest with 120,000 inhabitants and declared a disaster area, two dams collapsed and poured more than 33 million liters of water that swept away residential areas, bridges and roads in its path.

The storm, considered by specialists as an “extreme phenomenon in terms of the amount of water that fell”, affected Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria in the last few days, with a death toll of 27.
