Coral restoration project advances in Trinidad and Tobago

Port of Spain, Sep 12 (Prensa Latina) Program directors unfolded Tuesday that coral restoration project by the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) in Trinidad and Tobago completed its pilot stage successfully.

The project already completed had been lasting over 18 months and conducted to determine feasibility of recovery strategies for coral reefs and sea grasses given current ecological status, existing disturbances and management practices.

Newsday daily reported the project members described the multi-faceted approach used for the sake of ocean sustainability. In addition, the journal revealed that BPTT, the Trinidadian subsidiary of British oil BP Company and a partner in the restoration program, has committed USD $1.0 million in grants for the five-year project term.

The project will now focus on Tobago’s marine ecosystems within the Buccoo Reef-Bon Accord Lagoon marine protected area and the Man and Biosphere Reserve in the northeast region, the daily noted.
