In the most recent National Innovation Council, held at the Palace of the Revolution, the Cuban president said this is a very necessary issue for the country and that it has repercussions on the political, ideological, economic and social orders.
During the dialogue with the experts, the head of state explained that currently the paradigms of transitions at a global level are being set by first world countries, based on neoliberal concepts.
In this scenario, he asked himself: how will the countries of the South reach these technologies?.
The National Group of Universities for Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency (GNUFRE), proposed a Policy for the Energy Transition of Cuba, which forms a strategy to achieve, in a safe and sustainable manner, the satisfaction of energy demand in the island.
The Policy, said Díaz-Canel, has a broader conception, because the environmental, economic, social, and technological components are included, with a focus on sustainable development. He added that this view necessarily has to be supported by innovation.
The president advocated for work that follows up on what was discussed, to form a first project that is seen in the necessary instances and can be passed to the National Assembly of People’s Power (Parliament).
At the meeting he revealed that to achieve this objective, the participation of society, the support of multiple organizations and business systems, coordination with territorial governments and integration between experts from Cuban universities is needed.
The GNUFRE coordinator, Dr. Manuel Alejandro Rubio, pointed out that the country’s current situation is complex, but this cannot prevent it from thinking about a future for the energy matrix with tools and science.
Regarding the proposed policy, he stated that it is much more comprehensive and includes all sectors of society, in addition to assigning roles and goals to the rest of sectors such as business, services, agriculture and residential.
He added it also focuses on actions to achieve this long-term transition -towards the year 2050-, among which are financing, communication, innovation, and education with a view to this change.
